Larry Shapiro recently shared some updates about the Winnetka Fire Department's fleet. They’ve introduced a brand-new ambulance designated as Unit 28. According to Larry, this particular vehicle marks the penultimate unit manufactured by Medtec before their production ceased. It’s a Type I ambulance built on a 2012 IHC 4300 chassis and features Medtec shop order number 26264-1. Attached is an image of the new ambulance, clearly showcasing its sleek design and modern features. As noted in the caption, this 2012 chassis with a 2013 Medtec build represents one of the final projects completed by Medtec before they stopped operations. The photograph was taken by Larry Shapiro himself. For those familiar with the department’s fleet history, another notable change involves the reassignment of the previous 28R. The old 28R, a 2000 Type I Medtec built on a Freightliner FL70 chassis, has been sold to the Antioch Fire Department. In its place, the Winnetka Fire Department now operates a newer 2007 Type I Medtec ambulance mounted on a Freightliner M2106 chassis. A subtle “R” next to the number 28 identifies this updated vehicle as the new 28R. An additional photo highlights the transformation of the original 28, which now sports a refreshed appearance with black accents adorning the top of the box and the cab roof. This evolution reflects the department’s ongoing efforts to modernize their fleet while maintaining functionality and efficiency. These changes underscore the dynamic nature of emergency services, where adaptability and resourcefulness remain key components of delivering reliable care to the community. The Winnetka Fire Department continues to invest in state-of-the-art equipment, ensuring they can respond effectively to any situation that arises.
