A large, high-alarm fire engulfed an empty building in Arlington Heights on Thursday afternoon. The structure, which once housed a plastics manufacturing company, was completely destroyed. Deputy Chief Pete Ahlman said the fire department received a 911 call at 6 a.m. and found the one-story brick building at Arthur Avenue and Davis Street already fully ablaze. “When we arrived, fire was visible through the roof, and just a minute later, the roof collapsed,” he explained. The building, previously occupied by Tower Plastics, had been vacant since the company moved to Burr Ridge in early 2011. Local officials confirmed it was up for sale. Around 100 firefighters from Arlington Heights and nearby towns worked to contain the massive blaze, which produced 40-foot flames. It was one of the largest commercial fires in the village’s recent history. Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control by noon, using a backhoe to remove parts of the partially collapsed structure to gain better access. Tim Olk captured several powerful images of the scene, showing the intensity of the fire and the damage caused. Two video clips from Scott Peterson also provide a visual account of the event. More footage is expected to be shared tomorrow. Thanks to Tom for the update.
