Exhibition scale Beijing Auto Show promoted to the sixth largest auto show in the world
From June 9th to June 16th, the highly anticipated "2004 Beijing International Automobile Exhibition" will take place at the China International Exhibition Center and the National Agricultural Exhibition Hall. This year's event has drawn significant attention from global automotive leaders, with top executives from major international brands showing strong interest. Mr. Han Lida, President of Mercedes-Benz China Ltd., remarked, “This is the largest automobile exhibition that Mercedes-Benz has ever invested in China, ranking second only to the Frankfurt Motor Show globally.â€
Currently, nearly all major car manufacturers from around the world are participating, solidifying the Beijing Auto Show’s status as one of the world’s six major auto exhibitions, alongside the Tokyo, Paris, Frankfurt, Geneva, and North American shows.
**Exhibition Scale:**
According to the Beijing Auto Show Organizing Committee, the exhibition area has grown from 20,000 square meters in the first session to 110,000 square meters by the eighth edition. Attendance is expected to jump from 100,000 to over 400,000 visitors, while the number of journalists has increased from 50 to over 1,600. Over 1,400 exhibitors from 20 countries, including Germany, Japan, the U.S., and the UK, will be present.
Comparing to other major events: The 2003 Tokyo Motor Show had 263 companies and covered 41,559 square meters. The 2002 Paris Motor Show attracted 1.25 million visitors, while the Frankfurt Motor Show featured 1,003 exhibitors across 215,000 square meters. The 2004 Geneva Motor Show covered over 70,000 square meters and welcomed more than 700,000 visitors.
**New Car Lineup:**
This year’s show will feature over a dozen new concept cars and nearly 20 classic sports models making their debut in China. Highlights include the Ford GT40 concept car, the Aston Martin used in James Bond films, and the 980 million Dutch Spyker sports car. Domestic brands like Cadillac CTS, Dongfeng Nissan "Scorpio," and Shanghai Volkswagen MPV "Tourian" will also make their appearances.
In comparison, the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show featured 96 Japanese models and 87 world debuts, while the 2004 North American Auto Show included over 40 automakers and 700 new models. The Geneva Motor Show showcased over 900 brands, including 30 concept cars.
**International Participation:**
More than 20 global automotive giants, such as General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota, BMW, Honda, Peugeot, Renault, Nissan, and Ferrari, have confirmed their participation. Their booths and model selections are on par with the world’s top five auto shows. Domestic brands like FAW, SAIC, and Dongfeng will also showcase their latest innovations under the "Domestic Cars" theme.
Compared to the top five shows, Chinese cars are rarely seen at events like the Geneva Motor Show, where only high-end models like the Peugeot 307 were displayed.
**Economic Impact:**
The Beijing Auto Show is already generating substantial economic benefits. The "auto show effect" is evident in booming sectors like catering, parking, rentals, and tourism. It is estimated that for every 1 yuan of direct revenue, there is 9 yuan in social benefits. Exhibitors' spending in retail and entertainment is ten times higher than that of ordinary consumers. Experts predict that the show could generate up to 20 billion yuan in direct income through rent and ticket sales alone.
For reference, the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show generated over $8.3 million in booth rental revenue, while the 2004 North American Auto Show made $10 million from tickets alone. The Geneva Motor Show brought in 150 million Swiss francs in total.
Overall, the 2004 Beijing International Auto Show is not just a display of vehicles, but a major economic and cultural event that continues to grow in influence and significance on the global stage.
