The world's major tire manufacturers have invested more than 10 billion US dollars for tire expansion and manufacturing upgrades. The world's tire industry has thus added 250,000 pieces/day of production capacity, including more than 10 green tire factories. According to the “World Tire Business†data, the tire investment in 2011 was 6% higher than the 9.6 billion US dollars in 2008, the highest historical year. The region with the largest amount of investment was Asia, with a total of 2.9 billion U.S. dollars; followed by North America with 2.75 billion U.S. dollars; Europe with U.S. investment of 1 billion U.S. dollars, mostly in Eastern Europe. Other investments are for tire projects in Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. Tire Investment has increased the global production capacity of 222,000 tires/day, 230,000 tires/day, and approximately 600 tons/day non-road tires. At the same time, some tire companies have closed down, resulting in a reduction of production capacity of 50,000 pieces/day. Bridgestone Japan leads the tire investment for the second year in a row, with a total investment of US$2.6 billion for the construction of seven tire projects (including three green tire factories). Japan's Yokohama investment ranks second with a total of 1.75 billion U.S. dollars. Italy's Pirelli Investment ranks third with a total of US$1.12 billion. Michelin’s investment is $1 billion. Compared with 2010, the investment volume of major tire companies increased by double digits in 2011, making the investment budget/sales revenue rate increase by more than one percentage point to 7.1%. At least three companies, such as South Korea's Nexen Tire, Finland's Nokia, and China's Linglong Group, have doubled their investments in 2011 compared with 2010. Nexans Tire's investment budget/sales revenue rate reached a record 23.8%.
