I recently came across some interesting information about the Bloomingdale Fire Protection District No. 1, which has now been added to the website. This district operates under MABAS Division 12 and maintains three fire stations, although one of them is primarily used for storage purposes. Station 2, located at 6N480 Keeney Road (though it carries a Roselle address), was once part of the Keeneyville Fire District. This particular station houses two spare fire engines and an out-of-service ambulance that could potentially be transformed into a specialized dive unit. One of the standout features of Bloomingdale’s emergency services is their own dispatch center, located in the basement of Station 1. This dispatch center not only handles calls for Bloomingdale but also supports the Elk Grove Township Fire Protection District and the Itasca Fire Protection District. When it comes to their fleet, Bloomingdale exclusively uses Pierce apparatus, including a tower ladder and three engines mounted on a Lance chassis, one on an Enforcer chassis, and another on a Quantum chassis. They’ve also placed an order for a new 2,000-gallon pumper/tanker on a Velocity chassis, expected to arrive this year. Their operational ambulances and Dive Squad vehicles are equipped with boxes manufactured by Horton. The newest addition to their fleet is Engine 1, a 2005 Pierce Quantum, which is the latest model in their lineup. Interestingly, before transitioning to Pierce, Bloomingdale had been a long-time Pirsch customer. In 1981, they acquired the final engine on a custom Pirsch chassis, which complemented two other engines and a 1972 85-foot mid-ship quint. That same year, Engine 2 was outfitted with the last custom cab crafted by hand at the Pirsch factory in Kenosha. Following this, Pirsch began purchasing standard cabs from Truck Cab Manufacturers (TCM) and adding their own trim packages to maintain a distinct look. Another notable vehicle in their history is Truck 4, built in 1972 to match one of the existing Pirsch engines in the fleet, complete with edge warning lights. Over time, Bloomingdale expanded their collection to include four custom Pirsch units that were perfectly matched. These updates provide a glimpse into the rich history and current operations of the Bloomingdale Fire Protection District, highlighting both their past reliance on Pirsch and their present commitment to modernizing their fleet with state-of-the-art Pierce technology.
