This morning, the Chicago Tribune covered an intense 2-11 alarm fire that erupted on the city's West Side. The fire reportedly originated in a Chinese restaurant and quickly spread to two adjacent storefronts with second-floor apartments. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
According to the Chicago Fire Department, the fire seemed to start in the one-story restaurant located near the intersection of Cicero Avenue and Harrison Street in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. Fire Department spokesman Richard Rosado mentioned that the blaze was fueled by tar on the roof of the restaurant, which allowed it to leap across to neighboring buildings.
The fire broke out around 3 a.m., spreading rapidly even amidst steady rainfall. By 5:45 a.m., firefighters had managed to bring the inferno under control after what must have been a grueling effort. Up to 99 firefighters were dispatched to the scene to tackle the blaze.
Photographer Gordon J. Nord, Jr. was present at the site and captured several striking images of the firefighting operation. His photos vividly depict the intensity of the flames, with thick smoke billowing out of the restaurant and multiple fire trucks and aerial units working tirelessly to extinguish the fire. One particularly dramatic image shows a tower ladder hitting the flames from above while other units worked below using hand lines in the street.
Another compelling photograph highlights the Squad 2A team setting up operations directly in front of the building on Cermak. There are also shots showcasing firefighters operating from within the Snorkel basket, as well as powerful aerial streams being deployed against the roaring fire. In one image, you can see the roof of the restaurant almost entirely engulfed in flames, with firefighters continuing their efforts to contain the situation.
