The images here, sourced from Dave Fornell’s collection, showcase some iconic Ford C-Series Ward LaFrance engines used by the Chicago Fire Department (CFD). These particular Ward/Ford canopy pumpers were delivered towards the end of 1969, comprising a total of ten units, and they remain the sole Ward LaFrance/Ford canopy pumpers ever received by the CFD. While there were several non-canopy Ward/Fords delivered, along with quite a few Pierce/Ford, E-One/Ford, and even Seagrave/Ford canopy pumpers. These Ward LaFrance/Ford engines were assigned to some of the busiest stations in the city, where they were pushed to their limits. Each unit featured a rear-mounted winch and was constructed on Ford C-8000 chassis with 175-foot wheelbases. In contrast, the later models from E-One and Pierce utilized 153-foot wheelbases, primarily due to the reduced size of the canopy seating area. Back then, the annual apparatus orders were divvied up among politically connected vendors. When these Ward/Ford rigs arrived, Schuster Equipment was the designated vendor. Pierces (and Seagraves) came from Illinois FWD Truck and Equipment in Rosemont, owned by Ray Schuster, who happened to be the brother of Schuster Equipment's owner. Meanwhile, the E-Ones were supplied by Able Fire and Safety. The photos provide a glimpse into the history of these vehicles: - One image captures a rig undergoing acceptance testing on the lake near McCormick Place. - Another shows Engine 19's rig right after delivery, parked in front of its station. - As time passed, photos of Engine 95 and Engine 61 in front of their respective stations also appear. - A notable evolution seen in Engine 95 involved carrying 150 feet of 3-inch supply line, with 100 feet on top of the driver’s side compartments and the remaining length in the hose bed. This setup foreshadowed the 150 feet of 4-inch line carried on the front bumpers of modern Chicago fire engines. - One photo highlights this innovation in action during a junkyard fire on the West Side in the late '70s. - Engine 19 is pictured in operation during a 1977 fire, showcasing its distinctive three-compartment driver’s side body. Legend has it that a careless driver once collided with the rig, leading to an insurance settlement that allowed 3D Metals in Wisconsin to replace the original body. - All 1969 Ward/Fords had the same two-compartment design on each side. The subsequent E-One, Seagrave, and Pierce bodies incorporated half-height compartments atop the lower ones. - These Ward/Ford rigs marked the final batch of such engines delivered to the CFD.
