Yesterday morning, I witnessed a significant fire that broke out in a vacant two-story building in Chicago Heights. By the time the first emergency units arrived, the structure, measuring approximately 35 by 40 feet, was already engulfed in thick smoke. Investigators suspect the fire may have been deliberately set, as it quickly spread and completely destroyed the building, which housed apartments above an empty storefront.
Several neighboring fire departments, including those from Matteson, Park Forest, South Chicago Heights, Flossmoor, Steger, Crete, and Homewood, provided crucial support to the Chicago Heights Fire Department. The fire was first reported around 11 AM and occurred on the 200 block of US Route 30, right before Christmas Eve.
I was there when Tim Olk captured some powerful images of the incident. You can view his full photo gallery [here]. Additionally, CBS Chicago published a brief article about the event, which you can read [here].
The firefighters worked tirelessly under challenging conditions. One particularly striking image shows elevated master streams from Matteson’s ladder and Chicago Heights’ tower ladder being used to douse the flames. Another photo highlights firefighters deploying a hose through the front door as dense smoke billowed out. In yet another shot, heavy fire and smoke can be seen escaping from the side of the building as firefighters bravely ventilated the windows.
Chicago Heights Truck 673, an impressive HME/Smeal 100-foot tower ladder, played a critical role in the operation. It was positioned directly in front of the building, providing essential support. Other photos reveal the intensity of the fire, especially in the rear where flames could be seen raging on both floors. One firefighter was seen skillfully directing a powerful water stream from the bucket of Tower 673, showcasing the dedication and precision required during such emergencies.
This fire was not only devastating for the community but also a testament to the bravery and teamwork displayed by all involved.
