Concrete and Steel Repairs at a Mining Facility After more than 60 years of salt mining, the structural integrity of this facility had significantly deteriorated. The constant exposure to harsh environmental conditions, including high moisture levels from nearby Lake Huron and extreme cold, led to severe damage. Walls, columns, beams, and secondary structural members showed visible signs of efflorescence, spalling, steel loss, and overall structural degradation. The facility's environment was particularly challenging due to the presence of chloride ions from the salt production process. These ions penetrated the concrete, causing rebar to swell and pop out, which in turn led to extensive concrete spalling. This kind of damage not only weakened the structure but also posed serious safety risks over time. To address these issues, HJ3 developed a custom composite fiber system using CarbonSeal™ technology. This advanced solution was designed to restore lost tensile strength and shear reinforcement in key structural elements, including external walls, targeted columns, and internal supports. The system involved applying carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) to beams, slabs, and walls, followed by a protective topcoat. The finished installation demonstrates how the CarbonSeal system effectively restored the structural strength of the facility. A total of 9,800 square feet of surface area were repaired and strengthened using 20,000 square feet of carbon fiber. This intervention extended the life of the facility by up to 30 years, ensuring long-term durability and safety.
