From the City of Evanston's official website:
The Evanston Fire and Police Departments have announced they will host a solemn remembrance ceremony on Wednesday, July 22, starting at 2 p.m., at Firemen’s Park. The event aims to honor the memories of three fallen firefighters—William Craig, George Stiles, and Marty Leoni—who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the community.
This year marks significant anniversaries for each of these heroes. It has been 110 years since the tragic death of William Craig and George Stiles, who perished in the devastating Clayton Marks Building fire on December 13, 1905, at 1900 Dempster Street. Thirty years ago, Firefighter/Paramedic Marty Leoni lost his life while responding to a fire at 1927 Jackson Avenue. He was attempting to rescue an infant trapped on the second floor when tragedy struck. This marked the second time in the century that the Evanston Fire Department confronted the harsh reality that every firefighter knows could happen but hopes never does.
Fire Chief Greg Klaiber expressed his gratitude during the announcement, stating, “On July 22, we pay tribute to Firefighter/Paramedic Leoni, as well as Firefighter Craig and Firefighter Stiles, who demonstrated unwavering courage and dedication to our city.â€
The ceremony will feature several poignant moments, beginning with the assembly of personnel at 2 p.m. followed by a presentation of colors led by the EFD/EPD/AFFI Honor Guard at 2:10 p.m. Chaplain David Jones will lead a prayer service and moment of silence at 2:15 p.m., allowing attendees to reflect on the sacrifices made by these brave individuals. At precisely 2:25 p.m., there will be a dispatch of the last alarm—a touching tribute to those who have fallen in the line of duty.
Remarks will follow at 2:30 p.m., featuring heartfelt speeches from Fire Chief Greg Klaiber, Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl, and retired Captain Mike Adam. The Tolling of the Bell Ceremony will take place at 2:45 p.m., symbolizing the end of their service. The stand down of colors will occur at 3 p.m., concluding the formal portion of the event. Guests are invited to stay for fellowship and food starting at 3:10 p.m.
All members of the public are warmly invited to attend this meaningful gathering. Firemen’s Park is located at the intersection of Simpson Street and Maple Avenue. For additional details or inquiries, please contact 847-448-4311. Residents within Evanston can conveniently dial 3-1-1 for assistance.
As someone who has lived in Evanston for over 15 years, I’m deeply moved by this annual tradition. It serves as a powerful reminder of the risks firefighters and police officers take daily to keep us safe. I encourage everyone to join us in honoring these courageous individuals and their families. Let’s come together as a community to celebrate their legacy and ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten.
