From the City of Evanston's official site: On Wednesday, July 22, at 2 PM, the Evanston Fire and Police Departments will host a solemn remembrance ceremony at Firemen’s Park to honor the courageous firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice: William Craig, George Stiles, and Marty Leoni. This year marks significant anniversaries—110 years since the tragic deaths of firefighters Craig and Stiles in 1905, and 30 years since the untimely passing of Firefighter/Paramedic Marty Leoni. Both Craig and Stiles lost their lives battling the devastating fire at the Clayton Marks Building on Dempster Street on December 13, 1905. Tragically, Leoni perished on July 22, 1985, while responding to a call about an infant trapped inside a burning home on Jackson Avenue. His death marked the second time this century that the Evanston Fire Department faced the harsh reality that no one ever wishes for but all firefighters know could happen. Fire Chief Greg Klaiber shared these heartfelt words: "We gather today to pay tribute to Firefighter/Paramedic Marty Leoni, along with Firefighter Craig and Firefighter Stiles, whose selfless acts exemplify the courage and dedication of those who serve our community. Their sacrifices remind us of the risks and responsibilities carried by every first responder." The ceremony will also recognize other fallen firefighters and police officers who bravely gave their lives in the line of duty. These ceremonies are a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by so many. Let's continue to support and remember these brave individuals and their families. If you're planning to go, be sure to arrive early to find parking and get settled. The park is small but holds so much history and meaning for our city. Stay safe and take care!
