These innovations not only improve living comfort but also contribute significantly to energy efficiency. But how do they work, and can ordinary homeowners benefit from them too? One of the most popular energy-saving features is the fresh air system. This technology allows homes to maintain a constant flow of clean, fresh air without the need to open windows. The system works by drawing in outside air, filtering it, and then exchanging it with stale indoor air through a heat exchanger. This process helps regulate temperature while keeping the indoor environment comfortable. According to Zhang Zedong from Feng Shang International Real Estate Development Company, the system ensures that the outgoing air is always 2-3°C cooler than the indoor temperature, while the return air is efficiently expelled through a negative pressure mechanism. For homeowners in traditional buildings, installing a fresh air system is possible, but there are some considerations. First, there must be enough ceiling space—typically 20-30 cm—to accommodate the ductwork. Second, access to an outdoor air vent is essential. As for cost, a typical 100-square-meter home might require around ¥10,000 for installation. Another key technology is low-E (low-emissivity) glass. This type of glass has a special coating that minimizes heat transfer. In winter, it reflects heat back into the room, reducing heating costs. In summer, it blocks heat from entering, helping to keep the home cool. Additionally, using low-E glass can significantly lower carbon emissions by decreasing the need for heating and cooling. Homeowners with regular glass can upgrade by either applying energy-saving window films or replacing their windows entirely. Window films are a more affordable option, costing between ¥100 and ¥300 per square meter, while full replacement with low-E glass can range from ¥700 to ¥1,000 per square meter. Lastly, the ground-source heat pump system offers another eco-friendly solution. It uses the stable temperature of the earth to provide heating in winter and cooling in summer. Unlike traditional HVAC systems, it doesn’t emit carbon dioxide and relies on renewable energy from the ground. However, this system requires deep underground piping, which makes it unsuitable for most existing homes. Developers would need to conduct extensive site assessments before implementing it. Despite the high initial cost, it’s considered a long-term investment in sustainability and energy efficiency. These green technologies are becoming increasingly accessible and offer practical ways for both new and existing homeowners to reduce their environmental impact while enjoying greater comfort and savings.
