The Daily Herald recently published a heartwarming story about Rolling Meadows firefighters who went above and beyond to support a young burn victim during his recovery.

Firefighter Rick Acosta from Rolling Meadows made a special visit to La Rabida Children’s Hospital in Chicago last month, and what he saw brought a smile to his face: an iPad was charging beside the bed of 8-year-old Adorian Fentry, a boy from Rolling Meadows who had been rescued by Acosta and his team earlier that year.

Adorian had suffered severe burns after accidentally knocking over a candle while sitting on a cocktail table at home in March. He sustained second- and third-degree burns across 35% of his body, requiring long-term treatment and rehabilitation at La Rabida, a hospital located on the South Side of Chicago.

Knowing that Adorian would be unable to see his family or classmates except on weekends, Acosta and members of Rolling Meadows Firefighters Local 3075 decided to do something special. They pooled their resources to buy two iPads for the young patient, hoping the devices would help him stay connected with loved ones through video calls using FaceTime and Skype.

“When we deal with children in traumatic situations, it really hits close to home,” Acosta shared. “Our union members wanted to help this family, and they donated money without hesitation. The fire chief also contributed to make this possible.”

Acosta said the main goal was to bring some joy into Adorian’s life. And it worked — when the firefighters visited the hospital in May, they were greeted with wide-eyed excitement. Eight firefighters, including four who had responded to the original 911 call, surprised Adorian with the gifts.

“His eyes lit up when he saw us walk in,” said firefighter Colin Barr. “Then he got even more excited when we gave him the iPads.”

But the emotional moment didn’t stop there. After the gift-giving, Adorian even left his wheelchair to shake the firefighters’ hands and thank them personally.

Barr reflected on how impressed he was by Adorian’s courage and kindness. “He stayed so calm during the incident, and now he’s showing so much strength and gratitude. It’s really touching to see.”
