Severe energy-saving and emission-reducing situation "green manufacturing" is imminent
Since 1996, American manufacturing engineers and scholars have published a "blue book" on green manufacturing, introducing the concept of environmentally sustainable production. Green manufacturing has gained increasing attention from developed countries, especially after the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) introduced the ISO 14000 series of environmental management standards. These standards positioned green manufacturing as an advanced model that supports sustainable development. With rising environmental protection standards and technological progress, green manufacturing is expected to become the main direction of manufacturing in the 21st century, with green competitiveness becoming a key element of industrial competitiveness.
Under this context, the manufacturing sector is shifting from traditional models, adopting green technologies, developing eco-friendly materials, energy sources, and design databases. This transition aims to produce environmentally friendly products that enhance resource efficiency. While China's auto industry enjoys new development opportunities, it also faces challenges such as oil supply security, environmental protection, and global warming. In response, "green manufacturing" is becoming a strategic choice for the industry. At the First Seminar on Green Manufacturing Technology for the Machinery Industry in Beijing in December 2007, experts highlighted that traditional industries like automobiles, being major energy consumers, must change their production methods to save energy and reduce consumption.
Globally, the automotive industry is witnessing a "green wave." Many countries have launched "green plans" to protect the environment, requiring imported cars to be green-certified. Some nations impose strict environmental indicators to restrict foreign products, creating green trade barriers. In Europe and the U.S., automakers are promoting "no-waste processing" and using eco-friendly materials. For example, General Motors uses Aubel steel balls instead of hardened steel to cut energy use by 50% and costs by 40%. Chevrolet’s engine allows 43% of parts to be directly dismantled and reused.
The 78th Geneva International Motor Show in March 2008 reflected this green trend, with over 260 exhibitors showcasing energy-saving, eco-friendly vehicles and technologies. Green manufacturing is gaining momentum globally, influencing the direction of the automotive industry. In China, while there is a gap in green manufacturing compared to developed countries, efforts are accelerating. Premier Wen Jiabao emphasized resource conservation and environmental protection in his 2008 government work report, and the "two sessions" focused on energy saving and emission reduction. Representatives and members proposed initiatives to promote green manufacturing, including developing small-displacement vehicles, new energy vehicles, lightweighting, recycling end-of-life vehicles, remanufacturing auto parts, and fostering collaboration between enterprises and research institutions.
China’s auto industry needs to achieve breakthroughs in six areas: prioritizing small-displacement vehicles, advancing new energy vehicle technology, reducing vehicle weight, improving recycling systems, expanding remanufacturing, and strengthening collaborative efforts. The development of small-displacement vehicles, for instance, requires policy support, clearer standards, and improved quality. New energy vehicles, such as electric and hybrid models, are critical for both environmental sustainability and international market access. Lightweighting reduces fuel consumption and emissions, while recycling and remanufacturing help conserve resources and reduce waste.
Overall, green manufacturing is not just a trend but a necessity for the future of the automotive industry. It demands innovation, policy support, and a long-term commitment to sustainability. As China continues to invest in green technologies and practices, the industry is poised to play a significant role in shaping a more sustainable global automotive landscape.
