The successful production of dimethyl ether by a single process of nitrogen fertilizer can reduce the energy consumption compared with the two-step method, and avoid one-step decarburization, achieving high quality, high output, and low consumption.

On March 1st, a reporter learned from the Henan Province Fertilizer Industry Company that the company's first application of the double-tower two-step one-step synthesis process technology was successfully implemented at Hebei Qiu County Longgang Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. The facility has an annual production capacity of 10,000 tons of dimethyl ether (DME) and is now producing refined DME products. By the end of February, just under a month after the launch, the company had already received dozens of inquiries from businesses interested in technology transfer and collaboration. It is worth noting that China's early industrial production of DME relied on methanol dehydration using sulfuric acid, which led to severe corrosion and environmental issues. As a result, this method has been gradually phased out. Currently, most domestic DME production uses the methanol gas-phase catalytic dehydration process, also known as the two-step method. While this approach is less corrosive and environmentally friendly, it requires methanol as a feedstock, making the production cost highly dependent on the methanol market. This leads to high energy consumption, high costs, and weak resistance to market risks. The one-step process, on the other hand, allows for direct synthesis of DME through a catalyst bed using carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Compared to the two-step method, it offers better economic benefits. However, due to a shift reaction similar to that in ammonia synthesis, the process generates carbon dioxide, requiring additional decarbonization equipment, increasing both investment and raw material costs. The newly developed "double-tower two-step one-step" synthesis technology optimizes resource utilization by leveraging the heat from methanol and DME synthesis reactions. It reduces the heating energy requirements typically associated with the two-step method and avoids the conversion reaction found in the one-step process. This results in high-quality, high-yield DME production with low consumption. Even small and medium-sized fertilizer companies can adopt this technology with minimal modifications, becoming key players in DME production. According to reports, the technology consumes approximately 1.6 tons of crude methanol and 1.3 tons of steam per ton of DME produced. The conversion rate exceeds 75%, and the process is simple, requiring only three additional pieces of equipment. For a 10,000-ton-per-year DME plant, the initial investment is around 3 million yuan. The product quality meets the standard of 99.9% pure DME, making it suitable for various industrial applications.
