Wärtsilä launches the largest power diesel engine

The world's first 14-cylinder low-speed marine diesel engine was officially commissioned on September 1 this year aboard the massive container ship *Emma Maersk*. Developed by Wärtsilä Diesel Engine Co., Ltd., this groundbreaking engine is not only the largest low-speed marine diesel in the world but also the first of its kind with 14 cylinders. This achievement marks a significant milestone in marine propulsion technology, pushing the boundaries of efficiency and power for modern shipping. The engine in question is the RT-flex96C model, boasting an impressive continuous output of 80,080 kW at 102 revolutions per minute. It measures 27.3 meters in length and stands 13.5 meters tall, weighing a staggering 2,300 tons. Designed for the next generation of large container vessels, it represents a leap forward in both performance and engineering innovation. Traditionally, low-speed marine diesel engines have been limited to a maximum of 12 cylinders. However, as ships continue to grow in size, there has been a rising demand for more powerful and efficient engines. In response, Wärtsilä introduced a 13-cylinder and later a 14-cylinder version of the RT-flex96C, significantly increasing the power output to 80,080 kW. These models were developed based on the earlier RTA96C design, incorporating advanced technologies to enhance performance and reliability. The 14-cylinder RT-flex96C utilizes the highly advanced RT-flex common rail system, which improves structural rigidity, reduces stress, and ensures greater reliability, safety, and durability. Additionally, it offers easier maintenance compared to previous models, making it a preferred choice for ship operators around the globe. To date, over 300 RT-flex96C and RTA96C engines have been deployed worldwide, with numerous orders already placed. This new development underscores Wärtsilä’s leadership in marine propulsion and its commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the global shipping industry. As the demand for larger and more efficient vessels continues to rise, innovations like the 14-cylinder engine will play a crucial role in shaping the future of maritime transport.
