On Sunday, the Lake Forest Fire Department and the Lake Forest Police Department hosted a solemn remembrance ceremony to honor the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001—including 343 firefighters from the FDNY, 23 NYPD officers, and 37 members of the Port Authority Police Department. The event took place at Market Square in downtown Lake Forest, where the community gathered to reflect on the tragedy and pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives.
A striking visual highlight of the ceremony was the display of aerials from Lake Forest and Knollwood, which were crossed over the square alongside an American flag, symbolizing unity and resilience. Attendees witnessed a heartfelt program that included speeches from local officials and a traditional bell ringing ceremony, marking the occasion with deep respect and solemnity.
Tim Olk, a local photographer, was present and captured several powerful images of the event. Among the photos is a shot of the honor guard—composed of Lake Forest police officers and firefighters—who marched the colors into the ceremony. Another image shows the honor guard preparing to post the colors as uniformed personnel stood by the fountain, while others depict uniformed members from both departments standing in formation.
Fire Chief Jeffrey Howell addressed the crowd, reflecting on the importance of remembering the past and honoring the fallen. A young boy proudly displayed his patriotism, and several retired firefighters were in attendance, showing their support for the cause. A bell ringing ceremony added a touching moment to the proceedings, echoing the somber tone of the day.
One of the standout displays was a vintage 1977 Seagrave P-series engine, now owned by the Lake Forest mayor and recently restored. This historic piece of equipment, which once served in McCook, was on display during the event, drawing attention from attendees. A second photo captures the same engine in its original yellow paint, highlighting its history and significance.
The ceremony was a moving reminder of the enduring impact of 9/11 and the strength of the community in coming together to honor those who gave everything. A gallery of images from the event can be viewed [here](#).
