Las Vegas, NV – Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), a global leader in design and making software, has made a significant contribution of $1 million to the Group Effort Initiative (GEI). This nonprofit organization is dedicated to creating pathways for underrepresented communities to gain hands-on experience and build long-term careers in the entertainment industry.
In the wake of the historic WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, many below-the-line workers and aspiring professionals faced major challenges. In response, GEI, with support from Autodesk, tripled its training and educational programs to keep participants engaged and connected during the industry slowdown. Over the next two years, these programs will expand across 18 cities where GEI operates, offering new opportunities for growth and development.
“Blake and I started GEI in 2020 with the goal of ensuring more diverse voices have access to the entertainment industry,†said Ryan Reynolds, co-founder of GEI. “With Autodesk’s support, we’re not only helping people stay on track but also giving them the tools to adapt and thrive in a fast-changing environment. Their software allows people to ‘make anything’—and today, we’re grateful they’re helping so many make something of their futures.â€
This partnership has already led to expanded training initiatives, including intensive bootcamps, virtual workshops, and mentorship programs. Participants have access to a wide range of career-focused learning, from cinematography to documentary filmmaking and post-production. GEI also offers professional development sessions such as mock interviews, resume reviews, and networking events to help participants advance their careers.
Autodesk COO Steve Blum emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting emerging talent. “We believe in empowering the next generation of creators with the skills and experiences they need to succeed,†he said. “Through our work with GEI, we’re excited to help future leaders in the entertainment industry gain access to training and connections that can shape their paths forward.â€
Beyond training, GEI has been focused on job placement and expanding opportunities. The organization has secured over 70 paid internships for participants in Los Angeles through partnerships with local government agencies. These placements are part of a broader effort to bridge the opportunity gap in an industry where personal networks often determine success.
“We listened to our participants during the strikes and used this time to ensure their careers didn’t stall,†said Sumi Parekh, Executive Director of GEI. “With Autodesk’s support, we’re not only growing our current programs but also expanding into new markets to create more pathways for underrepresented talent.â€
GEI has partnered with 280 companies and 154 talent pipeline partners to provide real-world experience and entry-level roles. Since 2020, the initiative has placed over 1,000 participants in 844 internships, 136 corporate jobs, and 182 production assistant roles. It has also facilitated 167 mentorship matches and hosted 75 educational events.
As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, GEI and Autodesk remain committed to fostering inclusivity, innovation, and opportunity for all.
