Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) has introduced a new tool called Autodesk FBX Review at SIGGRAPH 2013, designed for Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows 8 devices. This standalone application is aimed at professional artists and animators, offering them a lightweight yet powerful solution to review a wide variety of 3D assets, including detailed models, environments, and character animations. Chris Bradshaw, Senior Vice President of Autodesk Media & Entertainment, stated, "Our customers are always looking to speed up their project iterations while keeping the quality and fidelity of their designs intact. FBX Review helps streamline the asset review process, giving creative teams more flexibility—especially those working in mobile or decentralized environments." FBX Review is built with modern workflows in mind, where multiple internal and external stakeholders often work from different locations. It allows any user on a Windows device to view 3D assets without needing full-featured 3D animation software. For instance, an artist using Autodesk Maya can share an animation file with anyone who has FBX Review installed, and that person will have access to a complete set of viewing tools. The app supports a wide range of open 3D formats such as .fbx, .3ds, .obj, and .dxf, allowing artists to use their preferred 3D tools. Reviewers can then explore assets with various shading options, animations, cameras, and lighting settings in a DirectX 11-enabled viewport. Key features include: - Static and Dynamic Tessellation - Displacement and Vector Displacement Maps - Skin Deformations and Animation - Real-Time Shadow Maps - Reflection Maps - Light and Ambient Occlusion Maps - Image-Based Lighting - Ground and Sky Ambient Color For animation evaluation, users can easily cycle through different takes and camera angles, play, pause, and scrub through animations. Scenes can be viewed using the native cameras and lights from the file or with in-app perspective and orthographic views. FBX Review is also optimized for mobile use. Designed specifically for Windows 8, the mobile version offers the same full feature set as the desktop app but with a simplified, touch-friendly interface. Features like multi-view camera controls, touch-sensitive animation playback, and lighting adjustments make it easy for reviewers to interact with 3D assets on tablets or smartphones. To get started, Autodesk FBX Review is available for free on The Windows Store for Windows 8 devices and Windows 7/8 desktops. You can download it directly from The Windows Store or via Autodesk Exchange within the Autodesk Maya or 3ds Max stores.
