Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) has introduced a new tool called Autodesk FBX Review at SIGGRAPH 2013, designed specifically for Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows 8 devices. This standalone application is aimed at professional artists and animators, offering a lightweight yet powerful solution to review various 3D assets, such as detailed models, environments, and character animations. Chris Bradshaw, Senior Vice President of Autodesk Media & Entertainment, highlighted the importance of this tool: "We’ve seen our customers constantly look for ways to speed up project iterations while keeping high-quality assets that match the original design. FBX Review makes the asset review process more efficient, especially for mobile and decentralized creative teams." FBX Review is built with modern workflows in mind, where collaboration often involves multiple stakeholders across different locations. The app allows any user on a Windows device to view 3D assets without needing commercial 3D animation software. For example, an artist working in Autodesk Maya can easily share an animation file with anyone who has installed FBX Review, giving them full access to all features for asset evaluation. Supporting a wide range of open 3D formats like .fbx, .3ds, .obj, and .dxf, the tool gives artists the flexibility to work with their preferred tools. Reviewers can explore assets using various shading options, animations, cameras, or lighting settings in a DirectX 11-enabled viewport. Key supported features include: - Static and Dynamic Tessellation - Displacement and Vector Displacement Maps - Skin Deformations and Animation - Real-Time Shadow Maps - Reflection Maps - Light and Ambient Occlusion Maps - Image-Based Lighting - Ground and Sky Ambient Color For animation and scene evaluation, FBX Review offers intuitive controls to switch between animation takes and camera angles, making it easy to play, pause, and scrub through animations. Users can view scenes using either the native cameras and lights from the file or the in-app perspective and orthographic cameras. Designed with mobility in mind, FBX Review’s mobile version ensures a smooth experience for users away from their workstations. Built specifically for Windows 8, the mobile app includes the same feature set as the desktop version but with a simplified interface optimized for touch screens. It supports multi-view camera navigation, allowing reviewers to pan, zoom, and circle around assets, along with touch-sensitive animation playback and lighting controls. The app requires Windows 8, 50 MB of storage, and 4 GB of RAM. For the best performance, devices should have a DirectX 11-compatible graphics card. Autodesk FBX Review is now available for free on the Windows Store for Windows 8 devices and tablets, as well as for Windows 7 and 8 desktops. You can download it directly from the Windows Store or from the Autodesk Exchange within the Autodesk Maya or 3ds Max store.
