Las Vegas, NV – Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), a global leader in design and make software, has made a significant contribution of $1 million to the Group Effort Initiative (GEI), an organization dedicated to creating pathways for underrepresented communities to gain real-world experience and build long-term careers in the entertainment industry.
In the wake of the historic WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, many below-the-line workers and emerging talent found themselves at a crossroads. With productions on hold, GEI stepped up by expanding its educational and training programs—tripling opportunities to keep participants engaged and connected to the industry. This expansion is now being supported by Autodesk’s generous investment, which will help scale these initiatives across 18 cities over the next two years.
“We started GEI in 2020 with the goal of opening doors for underrepresented individuals in our industry,†said Ryan Reynolds, co-founder of GEI. “Autodesk’s support is helping us provide the tools and stability needed for our participants to not only find more opportunities but also adapt to the ever-changing landscape of entertainment. Their software lets people ‘make anything’—and today, we’re grateful they’re helping so many make something of their futures.â€
On Tuesday, Ryan Reynolds will join Autodesk Chief Operating Officer Steve Blum for a fireside chat at Autodesk University in Las Vegas. The conversation will explore how to navigate change, especially in fast-evolving industries, and how to drive positive transformation.
With Autodesk’s backing, GEI is focusing on building a resilient and adaptable workforce. Their programs range from intensive four-day Production Assistant bootcamps to virtual and in-person workshops on cinematography, documentary filmmaking, climate storytelling, and post-production. Participants also benefit from mock interviews, resume reviews, and networking events.
“Autodesk is committed to equipping the next generation of creators with the skills and experiences they need to succeed,†said Steve Blum. “Through our partnership with GEI, we’re proud to offer increased access to training and networking that helps aspiring professionals stay on track and build meaningful careers.â€
GEI also offers one-on-one office hours and a mentorship program that has already paired participants with 167 industry professionals. “We listened to our participants during the strikes and used this time to ensure no gaps in their development,†said Sumi Parekh, Executive Director of GEI. “With Autodesk’s support, we’re not just preparing people for current opportunities—we’re expanding into new cities and creating more pathways for success.â€
Job placement remains a core part of GEI’s mission, as the entertainment industry often relies heavily on personal connections. During the strikes, GEI secured additional paid internships through public-private partnerships. Since June, 70 Angelenos have been placed in internships supported by the City of Los Angeles and L.A. County.
