**Compressor Oil – What Color Should It Be?** Published by Filter Element Store on Oct 04, 2023 Have you ever wondered, “What color should my compressor oil be?” When it’s brand new, compressor oil typically has a light yellow to amber hue. While this might seem like a trivial question, monitoring the color of your compressor oil is actually an essential part of maintenance. Operators should check the oil’s appearance when it's first added and then regularly throughout its life to ensure it remains in good condition. Recently, we sent a customer a batch of PAG 46 compressor oil, which is a popular replacement for products like Ultra Coolant and other leading brands. The customer was surprised by the oil’s color and reached out to us with concerns. As shown in the image they provided, our PAG 46 oil is clear with a noticeable yellow or amber tint — which is completely normal for fresh oil. However, the customer had a different experience. They mentioned that the ISO 46 / SAE 10W-20 oil they received from their compressor distributor looked completely black. This raised some red flags. After further discussion, the customer shared more details: > "They had a service guy come out Friday, and he confirmed the coolant should be light in color. I got a picture of the OEM coolant they put in. He grabbed the old used coolant. He should have known better. See the picture of the old oil he put in." The oil in question was clearly very old and had been reused, which could have led to serious damage to the compressor. Reusing old oil is a big no-no and can cause unnecessary wear and tear on your equipment. It’s crucial to keep track of your compressor oil and follow a regular maintenance schedule. If the oil becomes significantly darker than when it was new, or if it smells burnt, it may be time for a change. Additionally, if the oil looks milky or cloudy, that could indicate water or coolant contamination in your system. One way to avoid such issues is to purchase high-quality compressor oil yourself, like our Made in USA compressor oil, and skip the hassle of relying on third-party technicians who might not always do the right thing. We offer top-quality aftermarket compressor oil and are not affiliated with any original equipment manufacturers or trademarks.
