I just came across something really exciting! Autodesk, the company behind so many creative tools, has launched the Make it Real Challenge to promote maker education. This challenge is all about encouraging students and educators to dive into the world of making and bring innovative ideas to life. For the second year running, they’ve expanded their initiative, offering four schools the chance to win fully-equipped makerspaces. Each lucky winner will receive some fantastic tools, including an Ultimaker 3 3D printer, a Dremel DigiLab Laser Cutter, and even ten Chromebooks. Altogether, the prize pool adds up to over $70,000 worth of awesome gear. On top of that, all schools worldwide get free access to Autodesk's software and educational resources. It’s such a great opportunity for anyone interested in making and creating. One of the coolest parts? They’ve already announced the grand prize winners this year, and their video submissions are absolutely inspiring. Let me tell you about a few of them: First up, Jim Bridger Middle School in North Las Vegas. Their “super maker teacher” is leading the charge, and the students there showed some amazing creativity in imagining how they’d use the prize tools to enhance their learning experience. Their submission was full of energy and innovation! Then there’s Paradise Intermediate School in Paradise, California. These students and educators really impressed me with their resourcefulness. They’ve been making do with what they have and showcased their incredible maker mindset. It’s clear they’re ready to take things to the next level with the right tools in hand. Brighton High School in Brighton, Massachusetts, also made a strong case. The students presented their design thinking process in a video and even held a detailed, student-led discussion about the benefits of making. It was inspiring to see how seriously they took this challenge. Lastly, Killingly Intermediate School in Connecticut put together a submission that drew inspiration from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. They showed off how they’re already using common materials like cardboard to create, and they explained how the new tools would help them foster a truly engaging learning environment. In addition to the big winners, Autodesk also gave out Chromebook prizes to eight other schools. Places like Boston Latin Academy, CLK Elementary School, and even schools as far away as Pittsburgh and Ontario all got a boost with ten Chromebooks each. If you want to read more about all these schools and check out their videos, head over to the Tinkercad blog. I’m personally excited to see what all 12 schools come up with now that they’ve got these amazing resources at their disposal. It’s really cool to think about how hands-on experiences like these can lead to such impactful learning outcomes. Here’s hoping this inspires even more schools to jump on board with maker education!
