Biogas power generation reclaimed water reuse sewage heat pump heating
The Beijing Gaobeidian Sewage Treatment Plant has implemented various initiatives to promote energy conservation and environmental protection. As a key facility in Beijing, it handles approximately 35% of the city’s wastewater. Since its operation began in 1993, it has treated a total of 2.8 billion cubic meters of sewage—equivalent to the volume of 740 Kunming Lakes—and removed 830,000 tons of COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand). This has significantly contributed to energy saving and emission reduction in the region. Over 14 years of stable operation, the plant has not only improved the water environment but also helped alleviate Beijing's water shortage.
One of the key energy-saving measures at the plant is the rational use of biogas for power generation. The sludge treatment process uses a two-temperature anaerobic digestion system, which produces biogas as a byproduct. Biogas mainly consists of methane and carbon dioxide, making it a clean and high-calorific fuel. Traditionally used for heating, cooking, and lighting, biogas can also be converted into electricity through power generation technology. This method effectively utilizes biogas, reducing reliance on external energy sources.
Currently, the plant digests around 4,000 cubic meters of sludge daily, generating approximately 25,000 cubic meters of biogas. With five biogas generators totaling 2,800 kW, four units are usually in operation, meeting about 30% of the plant’s electricity needs. Additionally, the heat produced during this process is used for sludge digestion, enhancing overall efficiency. To date, the plant has generated 65 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, enough to power 125,000 people annually.
Another important initiative is the reuse of reclaimed water. Gaobeidian is currently the largest facility in China for wastewater recycling, producing around 300,000 cubic meters per day—equivalent to 12% of Beijing’s tap water supply. Since its inception, the plant has supplied over 500 million cubic meters of recycled water. This plays a vital role in addressing Beijing’s severe water scarcity. Reclaimed water is used for toilet flushing, irrigation, road cleaning, car washing, and more. It supports green areas of about 260,000 square meters, supplies water to six plants, and even provides cooling for the Beijing No. 1 Thermal Power Plant.
Additionally, the plant employs sewage heat pump technology for heating and cooling. By utilizing the temperature differences in sewage—warm in winter and cool in summer—it can provide efficient heating and air conditioning. Compared to traditional systems, this method saves about 25% in energy consumption. For example, a plant with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters can heat 83,700 square meters in winter and cool 65,000 square meters in summer using the thermal energy from sewage. This demonstrates the immense potential of utilizing waste heat from wastewater.
Currently, both Phase I of the Gaobeidian Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Beijing Drainage Group Technical Training Center use sewage heat pump systems for central heating and cooling, significantly reducing energy consumption. These efforts reflect the plant’s commitment to sustainable development and energy efficiency.
