The Buffalo Grove Fire Department responded to a one-vehicle collision involving a tree around midnight on Thursday, which actually turned into early Friday morning. Upon arrival, the first responders discovered a late-model Cadillac Escalade that had suffered severe damage after crashing into a tree. The driver was trapped inside and required immediate assistance. Truck 25, Engine 27, Ambulance 25, and Battalion 4 worked together for nearly 50 minutes to safely extract the single occupant from the wrecked vehicle.
The force of the impact was so strong that it completely crushed the front end of the car, causing significant damage to the driver’s side. One of the driver's legs became pinned beneath the dashboard, making the extrication process both complex and time-sensitive. Firefighters began by removing the driver’s door to assess the situation and gain better access to the interior. As they worked, they also started preparing to remove the rear door, using tools to cut through the metal and create more space.
Photographer Larry Shapiro was on scene and captured several images of the operation. One photo showed firefighters carefully removing the rear window glass, while another highlighted the cutting of the door hinges to free the trapped individual. After the door was removed, the team proceeded to cut through the B-pillar to fully access the patient and ensure safe removal.
Despite the massive weight of the Cadillac—approximately 6,000 pounds—the tree remained firmly in place, proving to be an unyielding obstacle. The extent of the damage to the front of the vehicle was evident, with major structural deformation and debris scattered around the crash site. The firefighters’ efforts were critical in ensuring the driver’s survival and safe transport to the hospital.
