The Buffalo Grove Fire Department responded to a one-vehicle collision involving a tree around midnight on Thursday, which actually occurred early Friday morning. Upon arrival, the first responders discovered a late-model Cadillac Escalade that had suffered severe damage from the impact, trapping the driver inside. Truck 25, Engine 27, Ambulance 25, and Battalion 4 worked together for nearly 50 minutes to safely extract the sole occupant of the vehicle. The crash was so intense that it completely crushed the front end of the car, causing significant damage to the driver’s side and pinning one of the driver's legs beneath the dashboard. Firefighters began by removing the driver's door to assess the situation and gain better access. They then started preparations to remove the rear door, using specialized tools to cut through the metal and create space for the patient. Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, was on the scene and captured several images documenting the rescue process. His photos show firefighters cutting through the car’s structure, removing the rear window, and eventually cutting the A-pillar to fully access the trapped individual. Despite the heavy damage, the tree remained firmly in place, standing as a testament to the force of the collision. One image highlights the massive destruction to the front of the vehicle, while another shows the extent of the firefighters’ efforts to clear the way. The entire operation took considerable time and precision, with crews working carefully to ensure the safety of the injured driver. Additional photos from the scene are available in a gallery, offering a more detailed look at the aftermath of the accident. You can view more images here.
