On Saturday afternoon, just before 4 p.m., Engine 126 arrived at 7733 South Shore Drive, located near the city's southern lakeshore area. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a fire raging on the third floor of a five-story apartment complex. The blaze spread quickly, soon reaching the fourth floor as panicked residents called in distress. Firefighters entered the building from both the basement garage and through a third-floor window at the front of the structure.
Efforts were made to save a dog found on the fire floor. Paramedics performed chest compressions and administered oxygen, but unfortunately, the animal did not survive. A nearby resident was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor smoke inhalation. Several residents later told reporters that there were no functioning smoke detectors on the affected floor, which likely contributed to the chaos.
The photos accompanying this report, all captured by Eric Haak, vividly depict the intense firefighting efforts. In one image, firefighters can be seen taking a brief rest after battling the flames. Another shows paramedics attempting to revive the dog, while others capture moments of firefighters carrying tools or dragging hoses to control the spreading fire.
