Autodesk has made a significant move in the additive manufacturing space by entering into a definitive agreement to acquire netfabb, a leading German software developer specializing in industrial 3D design and production. This acquisition is part of a broader strategy that includes a strategic investment in FIT Technology Group, the parent company of netfabb. The collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of advanced 3D printing technologies across industries.
The deal, which is expected to close in Autodesk’s fourth quarter of fiscal year 2016, will be funded through foreign capital. While the financial details remain undisclosed, the transaction underscores Autodesk’s commitment to expanding its presence in the 3D printing market.
Samir Hanna, Vice President and General Manager of Consumer & 3D Printing at Autodesk, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “We are excited to welcome the netfabb team into the Autodesk family,†he said. “Together, we will push the boundaries of 3D printing, taking it beyond prototyping and into full-scale production.â€
Currently, over 80,000 professionals around the world use netfabb’s software as part of their 3D printing workflow. Autodesk plans to support and grow this community by continuing to develop, sell, and support netfabb’s tools while integrating them into its own platforms, such as Autodesk Fusion 360 and Spark 3D printing.
Carl Fruth, CEO of FIT AG, shared his confidence in the future of netfabb under Autodesk’s ownership. “We are thrilled to partner with Autodesk, a company that shares our vision for high-quality industrial additive manufacturing,†he said. “We believe this partnership will help netfabb continue to thrive and expand.â€
Autodesk has stated that this acquisition will not impact its previous guidance issued on August 27, 2015. However, the company acknowledges that there are risks and uncertainties associated with the transaction, including integration challenges, market demand, and competitive pressures. These factors are outlined in more detail in the company's SEC filings.
