The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2030, around 1 billion individuals will require reskilling. This pressing global skills gap poses a significant challenge across all industries we operate in. For years, our clients have been expressing concerns about the dwindling workforce due to retirements combined with a shortage of younger workers stepping into these roles. On top of that, the rise of automation is amplifying the demand for workers to acquire a fresh set of skills, creating numerous new positions without the necessary talent pool to fill them. In response to this challenge, Autodesk is spearheading lifelong learning initiatives to help workers stay competitive by acquiring new skills and earning professional credentials that open doors to opportunities. The Future of Work is already here, with automation becoming a norm in our industries. We're committed to assisting our clients in obtaining the professional skills they need to prosper. Today, we’re introducing the Autodesk Certification Program, which comprises eight new industry-aligned learning pathways and certifications designed to accompany professionals throughout their lifelong learning journey. Additional certifications and courses will be released next year. This program aims to empower both emerging and seasoned professionals to build and validate their skills, helping them achieve their learning and career aspirations. We’re offering certifications tailored to specific products, such as the “Revit Structure” certification, as well as certifications focused on specific workflows and industry roles, like the “Fusion 360 Mechanical Design” certification for mechanical engineers and machinists. Our role-based offerings will continuously evolve to meet emerging trends and shifting industry demands, ensuring workers remain up-to-date. For over 15 years, Autodesk has collaborated with workforce training centers to provide product-specific certification via in-person exams. However, as technology and automation have advanced, the necessity to adapt our learning and certification offerings has become crucial. I had the chance to speak with Jaime Perkins, who leads learning strategy at Autodesk, regarding our efforts to revamp certification. “We understand that technologies like AI are causing significant shifts in the industries we serve, impacting workers profoundly. We noticed an 800% increase in traffic to our self-paced learning resources once the pandemic began and realized it was the right moment to expedite the enhancement of our program. With this new platform, we’re adopting a fresh approach to certification—one that integrates self-paced skill acquisition into daily work, connects workers to a broader community, and propels them on a lifelong learning journey.” [Insert Image Caption: The new Autodesk Certification Program is designed to be flexible and self-paced. For instance, there’s no single role that requires using every function of a tool. Our new role-based offerings take these nuances into account, allowing someone to become certified in a specific role, such as a mechanical engineer, rather than focusing on a particular product like Fusion 360. Our role-based learning paths and certifications assist workers in developing, capturing, and communicating new competencies and experiences in ways employers understand and value. Initially, our new role-based certifications will align with Fusion 360, emphasizing core workflows in the industry. This includes a focus on CAD, CAM, design for manufacture, and the industry’s first generative design certification. ### Learning Pathways Prepare Workers for Both Certification Exams and Careers Through the Autodesk Certification Program, we’ve developed self-paced, modular learning that outlines each user’s unique learning path, ultimately leading to certification. We recognize that learning is personal and have crafted a program to cater to a wide range of skill levels, workflow applications, roles, and career ambitions, enabling our customers to embark on the learning journey that best suits them—on their own terms and at their own pace. Courses will vary in focus, covering everything from skill-building and workflows to preparation for specific certification exams. Once learners complete a series of courses or earn a certification, they’ll receive personal badges that can be added to resumes, portfolios, and professional networking sites to showcase their achievements to peers and employers. ### Training Infrastructure for Businesses Last year, we partnered with Monitor Deloitte to investigate the underlying issues causing the skills gap and how to assist workers in adapting and succeeding in the age of automation. A key insight from the research was that companies must reduce the gap between learning and work by embedding learning directly into the workplace, enabling workers to learn new skills while on the job. The challenge lies in the fact that most businesses lack the infrastructure to support comprehensive training systems. Autodesk certifications and learning pathways can help companies reskill their existing professionals through embedded, timely learning. This ensures that their current talent pool has the skills needed to keep their firms thriving. In addition to enhancing existing workforces through reskilling, industry certifications can aid companies in making more informed hiring decisions by targeting candidates who have passed our industry-aligned certification exams. ### Reskilling is Vital for Economic Success This upcoming year, as people continue to work remotely or require enhanced safety measures in physical workspaces due to COVID-19, the use of digital tools and automation will continue to grow. This means that the skill sets required to fill evolving and emerging roles will be unfamiliar to many professionals and job seekers. Reskilling and upskilling, along with the successful digital transformation of organizations, is critical to the success of the global economy. At launch, for every Fusion 360 user who successfully completes one of our new certifications after AU, we will match a donation to Humanmade, an Autodesk Foundation partner organization. Humanmade’s Next Generation Manufacturing Program is San Francisco’s first advanced manufacturing workforce development training initiative aimed at preparing low-income Bay Area residents for the Future of Work. [Hear from Autodesk about upskilling employees to prepare for the workforce of the future] Automation technology is pivotal in helping businesses and society meet the demands of a growing and urbanizing global population. We acknowledge its role in job disruption and recognize that Autodesk has an opportunity to help workers adapt. We are dedicated to supporting our current and future customers in thriving during this period of automation and societal transformation. Our new certification program is the latest way we’re facilitating lifelong learning for the most sought-after skills of the future—fostering a resilient, equitable, and prosperous workforce.
